Arrive Monday 16 November · depart Monday 23 November 2026. One lost Sunday going, one Monday lived twice coming home.
Skip every 37-hour, three-stop award itinerary aa.com offers to Wellington. Fly your miles to Auckland on AA 35 — American's daily nonstop 787-9 from Dallas (~15h) — and buy a cheap 1-hour Air New Zealand hop to Wellington with cash. Two short, civilized connections instead of a South Pacific odyssey.
You leave Charlotte Saturday evening and land in Wellington Monday afternoon. Sunday the 15th vanishes over the International Date Line — that's the dateline doing it, not layovers.
The dateline gives Sunday back: leave Wellington Monday morning, land in Charlotte Monday afternoon — the same Monday.
AAdvantage prices its own metal dynamically, so treat these as the ranges you should expect per person for CLT ⇄ AKL round trip on the AA nonstop. Web Specials routinely undercut the bottom of these ranges.
| Cabin on the 787-9 | Typical each way | Round trip | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Cabin (economy) standard seats; Main Cabin Extra costs a few $ more at seat-select |
40–55k (Web Special dips to ~32.5k) | 80–110k | The value play. 10:45 PM departure means you'll sleep some of it regardless. |
| Premium Economy | 60–90k | 120–180k | Meaningful comfort bump for 15 hours; only 21 seats, so space is patchy. |
| Flagship Business (lie-flat) | 85–130k+ | 170–260k | Glorious if the calculator says yes — 30 suites, and NZ summer awards get hunted hard. |
Plus roughly US$80–110 in taxes/fees on the award round trip, and ~US$110–190 cash total for the two Air NZ hops (NZ$90–150 each way, cheaper booked early). Book awards as two one-ways — same price, and AAdvantage awards cancel/redeposit free, so each direction stays independently flexible.
No AA cookies or login needed to hunt — aa.com shows award space logged out. You only sign in at the very end to spend the miles.
CLT → AKL → Sat 14 Nov 2026 → tick "Redeem miles". You want the itinerary pairing a CLT–DFW afternoon flight with AA 35 dep 10:45 PM.
Use the flexible-dates calendar view first — if the 14th prices stupidly, the 13th (arrive WLG on the 15th) or a Web Special can save 10k+ miles.AKL → CLT → Mon 23 Nov 2026, redeem miles. Target AA 34 dep 1:20 PM with a DFW–CLT connection.AKL → WLG Mon 16 Nov, ~12:30 PM or later, and WLG → AKL Mon 23 Nov, ~8:30 AM or earlier.
Separate ticket = your risk. The 3.5h buffers in this plan absorb a typical long-haul delay; a flexi fare makes rebooking free if things go properly sideways.CLT → LAX → AKL; ③ a different cabin on either nonstop (Premium Economy sometimes prices barely above economy); ④ the Qantas Plan B below (~31h, still one award ticket); and only then ⑤ aa.com's 37-hour LAX–SYD–WLG default this plan exists to avoid.
Season note: both AA nonstops to Auckland are seasonal (NZ-summer) services — the DFW flight runs daily from late October 2026, so your dates sit inside the season, but they're also inside peak award-hunting territory. Book early.
Everything else your miles (or NZ's transport network) could theoretically do, stamped accordingly.
The all-miles Plan B. One AAdvantage award the whole way to WLG: leave CLT Saturday afternoon, land Wellington Monday ~2–3 PM. About 31 hours — 4 more than Plan A — but bags check through and AA reprotects every leg. Use it if the Auckland nonstops have no award seats.
The ~37-hour, three-stop itinerary that started all this. Backtracks through Sydney; the SYD–WLG leg alone adds a 3h hop after 20+ hours of flying.
Bookable with AA miles and tropical, but NAN–WLG (FJ 461, 11:20 AM) currently flies only Tue/Thu/Sat — no Monday service, so a Nov 16 arrival means an overnight in Nadi and landing on the 17th. Wrong days.
Gorgeous ride, wrong dates. Southbound runs Mon/Thu/Sat but leaves Auckland Strand at 7:45 AM — before AA 35 lands. Northbound (Wed/Fri/Sun) doesn't run on your Mon 23 departure at all. Save it for a longer trip.
Great planes, wrong hemisphere. Routing a Wellington trip through Hong Kong or Doha turns 27 hours into 40+.
Plenty of other US–Auckland nonstops exist — all Star Alliance. Your AAdvantage miles can't touch them, and you have no other points currency. Cash on these costs what the miles are saving you.
Runs daily at least, unlike the train — but it's a full day of highway after 20 hours of travel, to save maybe US$40 over the 1-hour flight. No.
